Math Makes Sense 3 and 4: Practice and Homework Book
For additional practice of the outcomes covered in class, there is a practice book (in English) available by the same publisher as our class resource textbook, Mathematiques (in English: Math Makes Sense). We regularly refer to the lesson examples "Quick Review" and the practice questions in class, in French. I have added the links to the units covered and introduced for you to download the extra practice pages (PDF files) if you would like extra practice at home. |
Here are some of the concepts we have covered and are covering in class:

Estimer les nombres à la centaine près
JEU: "Course à 100" : 2 joueurs prennent tour de rôle et roule 2 dés, ajouter les nombres sur les dés, écrit le total sur le jeu ou le tableau de valeur de position en dessin des matériaux de base dix, quand tu as 10 ou plus que 10 unités, échange pour 1 dizaine, et quand tu as 10 ou plus que 10 dizaines, échange pour 1 centaine et c'est le gagnant!
*Two players take turns rolling 2 die. They add their total to the number that they are on. The first to get to 100, wins! Using the game board below or a place value chart (see attached) and regrouping 10 units for 1 ten, and 10 tens for 1 hundred. Ask you child how!

Simple Games to practice adding and subtracting:
JEU: "Gratte 30": On paper, write 1 to 30 in even rows and columns. Choose four numbers between 2-9. Then 1-2 players take turns trying to create a sum (+), a total (x) , find the difference (-) or divide (÷) to take numbers out of play (scratch them out) and the player that can figure out the last equation for the last answer, wins!

ADDITION ET SOUSTRACTION DES GRANDS NOMBRES:
-Addition strategies (Regrouping using base ten blocks; "Left to Right" by adding hundreds, tens, then ones; and "Right to Left" by adding ones, tens, then hundreds and add the sum or as adults, we prefer to regroup see p.48 Quick Review)
-Mental Math strategies (Tens then ones then add sums; and "Friendly" number. And in class, we also used doubles to add, for example: 27+25, think of 25+25=50, and 27 is two more so the answer is two more 27+25=52.)
-Subtraction strategies (Model with base ten blocks while taking note of the process, including exchanging; and Using an open number line to either remove or add to find the difference)
